my playlist goes kendrick, turnpike troubadours, sabrina carpenter, sturgill, and back again, so my concert outfits have to cover a lot of ground. fall makes it harder. a show that starts at seventy degrees ends at fifty-five, you're standing for three hours, and whatever's on your feet has to survive a sticky floor and a long walk back to the car.
for country shows, my answer is one pair of boots. these pasuot black knee-high cowboy boots have a pointed toe, a low chunky heel and a tall shaft with classic western stitching, and they go with everything i own. i build the outfit backward from them. here they are:

the boots every outfit below starts from
pasuot western cowboy boots for women, knee high, black
- tall pull-on shaft, about 16 inches, with classic western embroidery and no zipper to fight with
- pointed toe and a chunky heel of about two and a half inches, low enough to stand in for a whole set
- a wide opening, about 17 inches around, so skinny jeans tuck in and wider calves fit
- rubber sole and a mesh lining, and the page has fourteen colors if black isn't you
1. denim mini + big sweater
my favorite one for an october show. a light-wash denim mini skirt, an oversized cream knit sweater, and the boots. knee-high boots were made for exactly this: the shaft covers what the skirt doesn't, so it reads like a real fall outfit and not a summer one in denial. gold hoops, hair down, done. if it's cold, sheer black tights under the skirt and nobody can tell you're being practical.
2. slip dress + denim jacket
for early fall, when it's still warm enough at doors to be annoying. a midi slip dress in any solid color (rust is my pick for october), a cropped denim jacket that goes on when the sun goes down, and the boots. the dress should land a few inches below the top of the boot, so there's just a little leg between them. that's the length that looks intentional. this is also the outfit that photographs best in the lawn seats at golden hour, for whatever that's worth to you.
3. black jeans tucked in + a flannel
the one for an outdoor amphitheater in late october. black skinny jeans tucked into the boots, a fitted long-sleeve tee, and a flannel tied around your waist that you'll be wearing by the encore. tucking only works because the opening is wide. with straight-leg jeans, wear them over the boots and let the pointed toe show.
4. jean shorts + tights + leather jacket
the going-out version. jean shorts over black tights, a fitted black top and a faux leather jacket. it's the least country outfit here, which makes it the one i wear when the opener is country and the headliner isn't. it also works at a bar after the show without screaming i just came from a concert, even though everyone can tell.
break them in before the show, not at it
new boots plus three hours of standing is how you end up barefoot in a parking lot. i wear new boots around the apartment for three or four evenings first, with thick crew socks, while i do dishes and while charlie supervises from the couch. if a spot rubs, a moleskin patch on the back of the heel before the show fixes it. tall socks also stop the top of the shaft from rubbing the back of your knee when you're in a skirt.
what goes in the bag
most big venues have a clear bag rule now, so check the venue page before you go. mine is the small one from my clear stadium bag post: phone, a card, keys, lip gloss, a claw clip for when it gets hot in the crowd, and earplugs. bring the earplugs. future you at the next show will be grateful.
honest pros and cons
what i like: the shape is right. pointed toe, real western stitching, a heel that's tall enough to look like a boot and short enough to stand in. they're pull-on, so there's no zipper to break, and they go from a mini skirt to tucked jeans without looking like a costume. they were $49.99 when i looked, marked down from a higher list price that shifts week to week, with 4.4 stars from more than five thousand ratings, and the fit summary says they run true to size, which matched mine.
what to know: that wide opening is a pro and a con. if your calves are narrow, the shaft stands away from your leg a little and slouches by the end of the night. tall socks or tucked jeans fill it out. they're not three-hundred-dollar boots, and up close you can tell: the stitching looks great from three feet away, less so from three inches. and they're stiff for the first few wears, which is the whole reason for the apartment break-in above.
